Scottish spelling variant of Betty, a pet name for Elizabeth [q.v.], from an ancient Hebrew name meaning "oath of God".

There were a significant number of occurrences of this spelling in the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire. The spellings Bettey and Bety were also used; all should be found with a Soundex search.
