Gaelic, Anglicized as Bridget.

There was an ancient Celtic Goddess with this name - pre-dating the Irish patron saint [St Brigid of Kildare] - but the origin of the name is obscure. The Gaelic word for "strength" is brigh. However this may or may not be the origin of the forename.
