We have noted a number of occasions when Ellis has been used as a spelling variation of Alice in Scottish records.  It is unclear whether this is a simple spelling variation or a stand-alone variant but, since the use of Ellis as a female forename has not been found elsewhere, we feel that it may be just a dialectical spelling variant of Alice [q.v.].
