Notes:

English from Old Celtic "sea bright"

Muriel and Meriel were early variants of Muireall, a Scottish Gaelic name which was Anglicized as Marion. They were revived in the 19th century but only Muriel remained popular.

A correspondent [BF] recalls a relative whose given name was Muriel having the pet name Mimi but we are unsure if this is an established usage.
