Notes:

English, French and German form of Sophia [q.v.], from Greek "wisdom".

Also a pet name for Sophia, Sophie is, according to Whyte, now more popular than Sophia for a girl's name in Scotland.  However, in the 1841 and 1881 Censuses of Aberdeenshire, Sophia outnumbered the alternative by a factor of hundreds!
