English. Originally a German pet name for Wilhelmina, Wilma is now used independently as a given name as a feminine form of William from Old German "helmet of resolution" or "helmet of desire".

A correspondent [LPC] notes that Wilma can also be a pet name for the Scottish name Williamina.
