Alger (male)

Diminutive for:Algernon (M)

Source(s): The Oxford Names Companion, OUP
Notes:

This Old English name has a debatable source. ONC prefers "supernatural spear".

Alger was revived in the 19th century and is now more common in the US than elsewhere. Although it has a long history, it also acts now as a short form of the far rarer Algernon, from Norman French "moustached".
