Members on the IRL-Cork Message List have reported examples from several countries of Con being used as a pet name for Cornelius, an English and German forename originating from a Roman family name, possibly from Latin "horn".

Con is also a short form of Connor [q.v.] when it may alternatively be spelt "Conn".
