A correspondent [ID²] researching Scottish roots has come across the name in several lines, sometimes with uncertain gender. It is possible that the name, like the female version [q.v.], is a male variant of Euphemia but that link has no authority.

The female name Euphemia is from the Greek for "fair speech" so it is possible this meaning also applies here.
