Scottish form of Henry [q.v.], from Old German "head of household".

In the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire Hendray, Hendrey, Hendrie and Hendry were all frequent spellings variants of Henry [q.v.], possibly influenced by the Buchan dialect and the Scandinavian variant Hendrik.
