Innes (male)

Derivative of:Aonghas (M)
Lesser Synonym(s):Angus (M)
Feminine form:Innes (F)

Source(s): FreeCEN 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire
The Oxford Names Companion, OUP
Notes:

Scottish male and, more recently, female name. The male form is an Anglicized form of the Gaelic Aonghas as is Angus which is therefore classed as a lesser synonym.

There is no connection with the Spanish female name, Iñes although this may have influenced the increasing use of Innes as a female name.

Innes occurs quite often in the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire in approximately equal numbers of male and  female.
