Notes:

German form of John [q.v.], from Hebrew "God has been gracious". See also Johan.

The Viennese composer Johnann Strauss, junior, was known by the nickname Schani, a verbal representation of Jean the French form of Johann.  This name has now occasionally come into use in honour of the composer.
