English short form or pet name for Edward [q.v.], from pre-Norman Old English, "prosperous guardian".   Occasionally a given name in its own right.

Ned may also be a pet name for Edwin and Edmund and, in Ireland, for Éamonn.  A personal correspndent [MS] has reported that the further diminutive, Nedeen [= "little Ned"], is also found in Ireland.
