English short form of Richard, from Old German "hardy ruler". It is a popular nick-name and also appears significantly in the 1841 Census of Aberdeenshire as an abbreviation.

Note: There were a number of medieval Germanic names that had the element Rich- meaning "power".  These, as well as Richard, were shortened to Rich which was consequently used as a given name in the 15^th century.
