Doreen (female)

Variants:Dorean (F)
Pet Name(s):Dorrie (F) Reenie (F)
Derivative of:Diorean (F) Dora (F)
Can be spelt:Dorene (F) Dorine (F)

Source(s): The Oxford Names Companion, OUP
"Scottish Forenames" - Donald Whyte, FGH, FSG
Notes:

1. Whyte suggests this is from the Gaelic name Diorean which is possibly an Irish rendering of Dorothy. If this is so then Dorean becomes a true variant. Alternatively derived from the Celtic for "sullen".

2. ONC considers Doreen to be an early 20th century derivative of Dora, with the addition of the Irish diminutive suffix -een. ONC also specifies the alternative spellings.
